Authentic solo jazz classes cover the vernacular movements of the 1930s and 40s as used in solo and partnered swing dancing. The style is rooted in the dances originated by Black dancers in places like the Savoy Ballroom in Harlem, New York and is characterized by strong rhythms, musicality, and individuality. In this class, students will learn basic moves and short sequences with lots of time to practice to big band and traditional jazz of the 1920s through 1940s. Note: Students should wear comfortable shoes or sneakers that aren’t too sticky on the floor, allowing for some twisting and sliding. Classes are held on Zoom. Link will be emailed to students before class starts. Students will be required to sign an online waiver before class.
Learn to tap dance from home! This course is aimed at total beginners or dancers who want to brush up on the basics. You'll learn technique and steps slowly, working your way up to short combinations each week. Note: Tap shoes are helpful but not required. If you're wearing tap shoes, make sure you have a piece of plywood to put on a secure carpet to avoid slipping or damaging your floors while you dance. Leather-soled or smooth-soled shoes are recommended if you don't have taps. Classes are held on Zoom. Link will be emailed to students before class starts. Students will be required to sign an online waiver before class.
